Frequently Asked Questions

Most decay in a patient’s mouth goes undetected and the patient does not even know anything is wrong. This is because early tooth decay does not produce any sensitivity or pain whatsoever. It is only in the latter stages when the decay spreads close to the nerve/pulp of a tooth that problems will arise. These symptoms include sensitivity to hot, sweet and cold things. Later on if an abscess forms then the tooth can become painful to bite on or the gum swells up.

Eventually the nerve can become infected and the tooth has to be lost if an abscess forms. The tooth with decay also becomes so weak that it cannot be filled anymore.  Some tooth abscesses can be only treated by a root canal treatment to avoid extraction.

Decay inside any tooth can occur very quickly within a matter of weeks or can progress very slowly over many months. Dentists will offer to monitor early decay as there is evidence to show that early decay can be arrested or even reversed using the correct oral hygiene procedures and using fluoride topically.  If tooth decay is extensive than it should be treated immediately as the sooner it is treated the better the chance that your tooth can be saved instead of being extracted.
